Fabric
What Is GSM (Grams per Square Meter)?
A standard measure of fabric weight and density.
GSM (Grams per Square Meter) is the standard unit for measuring fabric weight. Higher GSM generally means a heavier, denser, more opaque fabric; lower GSM means lighter and more sheer. Hijab-weight chiffon typically falls in the 70–90 GSM range, while abaya-weight Nida fabric runs considerably heavier, often 180–230 GSM depending on finish. GSM is one of three essential figures — alongside weave structure and fiber composition — that should accompany any fabric under serious consideration, since a fabric name alone doesn't reliably indicate weight.
